Established in 2021, Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park is one of the first five national parks ever created in China. This biodiversity hotspot, which covers humid lowland tropical rainforests up through the cloud forests that blanket 1800-meter peaks, features rare species like the Hainan black-crested gibbon, orchids found only here and the misty moss-covered terrain of its highest elevations. The park is central to providing the entire island and its species — including humans — with the water that sustains life. Its high peaks trap moisture to replenish the island’s principal rivers, blanket its mountains and trees with mist and rain, and provide sustenance to all of its flora and fauna. Throughout, all species dance to the rhythms of the rainforest, evolving artful ways to coexist and thrive.
